3 Endocrine Disruptors You Can Ditch Immediately

Hormones are natural chemicals produced by your body that control almost every bodily function; from reproduction, to hunger, to emotion, to your metabolism, and so much more.

Your endocrine system controls the hormones that your body creates and releases.

Endocrine disruptors are man-made chemicals that enter the body and mimic your natural hormones. Instead of doing what the real hormone does, an endocrine disruptor produces either a less powerful response, more powerful response, or a totally different response in the body which leads to negative side effects short and long term.

The following three types of products contain endocrine disruptors. Replace them today!

1. Cleaning products with bleach, and any ingredient that you cannot recognize

Examples: Comet, Ajax, Windex, Lysol, Glade plug-ins, air fresheners, toilet bowl cleaners, and talc-based baby powder

Why: Research shows that many of the chemicals foud in everyday house cleaning products are bio-accumulative, which means that once in your system they stay in your system and allow for increased free radical damage. This makes you more vulnerable to autoimmune diseases and cancers.

For an all-purpose cleaner: vinegar and essential oils are especially good for cutting grease on counters and cleaning tile

For Windex: hydrogen peroxide

For Ajax or Comet: BonAmi or Arm & Hammer baking powder

For dishwashing liquid: Orange oil

2. Anything with phthalates; which includes most products with fragrance, and most plastic food containers

Examples: Watch out for products with the vague ingredient called “fragrance”…this usually equals phthalates.

Why: Studies have shown that phthalates trigger something called “death inducing signaling” in testicular cells, making them die earlier than they should. Studies have also linked phthalates to hormone changes, lower sperm count, less mobile sperm, birth defects in the male reproductive system, obesity, diabetes and thyroid irregularities.

Replacements: Tom’s of Maine and Burt’s Bees personal care products, for the most part, do not contain phthalates.

3. Dairy

Examples: Dairy milk, icecream, sour cream, and yogurt

Why: Milk contains an abundance of growth hormones. Excess growth hormones lead to increased risk of diabetes and increased triglycerides. Dairy can also cause your skin to produce more sebum or excess oil leading to clogged pores and acne.

Replacements: There are plenty of non-dairy alternatives out there. Try plant based milks like almond milk, oat milk, cashew milk, and soy milk. They have even more Vitamin D and Calcium than cow’s milk!
